CentOS Mati, Lahirlah Rocky Linux

8 Desember 2020, Red Hat mengubah CentOS 8 menjadi rolling-release based, CentOS Stream. CentOS 8 yang awalnya disupport hingga 2029, terpotong jadi 2020.

Sedikit Tentang CentOS

CentOS (Community Enterprise Linux Operating System), pertama kali dibuat pada tahun 2004. CentOS merupakan fork dari RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux). Dibuat ulang tanpa proprietary license dan support dari Red Hat.

Jadi untuk yang butuh linux stable yang gratis, tanpa perlu support dari Red Hat, CentOS merupakan pilihan yang bagus.

Rocky Linux

Co-founder CentOS, Greg Kurtzer tidak senang dengan keputusan Red Hat yang mengubah CentOS menjadi rolling release. Kurtzer mengatakan:

"I was just as shocked as the rest of the community with the news from Red Hat. When I started CentOS 16 years ago, I never imagined the incredible reach and impact it would have around the world on individuals and companies who rely on CentOS for Linux distribution."

Dan perusahaan yang menggunakan CentOS juga bukan merupakan perusahaan kecil. Disney, GoDaddy, RackSpace, Toyota, dan Verizon pun menggunakan CentOS.

Well, inilah salah satu alasan kenapa Rocky Linux dibuat. Kurtzer juga mengatakan:

"In response to this unexpected shift, I am proud to announce the launch of a new project, Rocky Linux, in honor of my late CentOS co-founder Rocky McGough. I've started calling on participation from the global community and quickly assembling a team to further our founding commitment of ensuring seamless continuity of business operations for companies running CentOS 8 far beyond 2021. In just one day, we've seen an overwhelming response from thousands of supporters eager to join the project."

Rocky Linux ditujukan untuk menggantikan CentOS Linux stable release, yang kemungkinan akan digunakan juga oleh perusahaan-perusahaan tadi yang dulunya menggunakan CentOS.

Untuk user biasa, pergantian dari CentOS biasa ke Stream tidak akan jadi masalah. Tapi untuk perusahaan besar, akan lebih sulit. Itulah kenapa stable linux yang punya long term support lebih banyak digunakan oleh perusahaan besar.
